Every idea or concept has its own life-cycle – it is born, developed, effectively applied and then it will begin to lose its usefulness and finally it becomes outdated and redundant and an improved idea or concept takes its place. This is progress. During the transition from the old to the new, there are some that are early adopters. They study the benefits and move quickly and easily to the new way; others prefer to stay with the old way.
This is what is happening today in the treatment of learning, behavior and mood challenges in children, teens and adults. The traditional approach is fast becoming ineffective and outmoded. Modern doctors are moving towards a whole new way of diagnosing and treating children with such problems and the results are outstanding. Yet many traditional healthcare practitioners are not open to discovering the new way.
Six critical weaknesses in the traditional medicine approach to the treatment of learning, behavior and mood problems.
Sees the child as flawed.
Traditional healthcare providers focus on the child’s symptoms, call it a ‘disorder’ and give it a diagnostic label. All practitioner-parent conversations are about ‘the problem’ and what is not working. This causes parents and teachers also to focus on ‘the problem.’ Children know when mom, dad, teacher, and doctor see them as flawed and they then see themselves that way too.
The child is often in the care of several different healthcare practitioners, none of whom are diagnosing and treating the whole child. Today healthcare practitioners can be certified in over 160 different specialties and sub-specialties. Unfortunately, this super-specialization means that a patient will typically see a different doctor for each symptom they experience without any physician considering all of the symptoms together. True healing cannot take place with a compartmentalized approach.
Treats symptoms as opposed to finding and fixing the underlying root causes.
When the underlying cause remains undetected and untreated the child’s symptoms will persist and true healing cannot take place.
Ignores the role of stress as the primary root cause
When the stress triggers are not identified and skillfully addressed, the chronic stress will continue to create systemic inflammation and stress chemistry which will prevent true healing from taking place.
Relies on diagnostic labels.
Those dastardly labels! Labels are extremely destructive to the health and well-being of the child, the parents and the family.
Suppresses symptoms with prescribed medication.
Treating symptoms with medication is a one-size-fits-all, band-aid approach that too often has negative short-term side effects and long-term repercussions that impact every aspect of the child’s life.
Ignores the critical role that parenting style has on the child’s neurochemistry.
Unbeknown to parents their parenting approach may be exacerbating the problem because it increases the child’s stress.
What’s different about my approach?
No more seeing the child as flawed.
Focusing on the child’s problems is replaced by focusing on the unique, healthy and talented child within. Parents learn how to focus on the potential and not the problems. This is a vitally important shift in the way the parents perceive, and behave, with their child. Children know when mom and dad see them as whole, and full of positive potential, and then they see themselves that way too.
No more compartmentalization.
A learning, behavior or mood problem never happens in isolation. Compartmentalization is replaced by diagnosing and treating the child’s spirit, body and brain as ONE system – the spirit-body-brain system. Parents learn exactly how to do this.
No more treating symptoms.
Finding, and treating the underlying chain of connected spirit-body-brain causes in each child can help to eradicate the child’s symptoms permanently. Although the external symptoms may be the same for many children, the causes will be different in each child. Looking for the root causes answers the question: Why is this happening to my particular child at this particular time? This is a personalized, customized approach.
No more ignoring the critical role of stress.
Stress is treated as the original trigger for the child’s problems. The fundamental principle of Parents, Take Charge is that stress begins in the spirit first, then causes stress in the body and brain of the child – which then can create learning, behavior and mood problems.
No more diagnostic labels.
Stigmatizing labels are replaced by identifying functional breakdowns in the child’s functioning caused by the stress.
No more prescribed drugs as a first line of treatment.
Parents learn how to use nutrition, supplements, herbs, essential oils and lifestyle changes, among others, for repairing and re-balancing the stress in the spirit, body and brain. The goal is to restore the body’s ability to heal itself. Parents, Take Charge is not against pharmaceutical intervention, but is against writing a prescription as the first, or only line of defense instead of using medication as a last resort.
No more minimizing the critical role of effective parenting skills
Parents learn NeuroParenting skills – easy to do and integrate into their normal routine. In this way moms and dads become skilled healers and play a pivotal role in their child’s treatment.
Where are you on this Lifecycle?
